Nargis came.
I wonder if everybody who hates the tyrants who have crushed the people of Myanmar under their boots had wished this: If only Nargis had swept through the jungle and flattened the new city. Then the generals would realise that there is karma for their violent crushing of the monks' revolt.
Surely the whole population of Myanmar outnumber the despotic generals and their footsoldiers! Yet they are so cowed that the baring of a few teeth are enough to make them tug their tails between their legs and look for the nearest hiding place.
It was with great disgust that I read the report about the lavish wedding of the general's daughter financed by the nation's wealth and not papa's salary. This was very much unlike the royalty of the free world who financed their weddings from their own pockets.
Yet, not a few of their young people manage to leave Myanmar to continue their schooling abroad. Who are they? Did they manage to leave because their parents were wealthy enough to bribe their way out? Or are they the offspring of those close to the generals who are sent abroad for a decent education? Their parents know the schools in Myanmar are slipping behind because those who can teach can't teach as they've been locked up for treason, denied a teaching job for being pro-democracy or have left for greener pastures. Why should their offspring be so privileged and gain access to quality education while other children are languishing and starving because their government will not allow foreign aid to reach them?
Not only do the privileged go abroad for an education. They also go abroad for the best medical care. Which soldiers in the free world can afford the best medical care in some of the most expensive hospitals in the world? Not many surely. The Myanmar generals don't deny themselves the best medical care but they deny their people basic medical care in the aftermath of Nargis.
