Was it fear of foreign interference in domestic politics that made the Myanmar tyrants shut the door to foreign aid?
Maybe. Maybe not.
There were reports that stuff that was donated and handed over to the military ended up on the blackmarket. What would have happened if the world had opened their pocket books and handed over the S$1 billion that the foreign minister had said would be needed to help the victims?
Not much of it would have reached the real victims. Perhaps some would have been spent on a model village to which hand-picked foreign journalists would have been invited to show the world how the aid money had been spent. (Remember the model refugee camp that they showed the world? What a hoot!) The rest would have been salted away in offshore bank accounts or to build more palaces to house the extended families of the military rulers. What else can we expect of a group of fat cats who lack a conscience?
Perhaps, when told about the suffering of the Nargis refugees, somebody at the palace said, "Let them eat cake!"
